reading bram stoker’s letter to walt whitman
#like yes it is objectively funny that this historical figure wrote fanmail to his idol#because it’s funny when you strip away the polish of ‘historical figure’ and get to the human being underneath#but also. he wrote this letter in a fit of genuine emotion and then shoved it in his desk and hid it in shame for years#and like!! the first half of the damn thing is him fighting himself to just get to the point already#you can throw this letter in the fire you TOTALLY can if you don’t want to read it but also if you’ve read this far I’d appreciate you#letting me know you got it but also it’s TOTALLY FINE if you want to BURN THIS WHOLE THING#and it just… it makes me so emotional#i sit by the ocean and I read your poetry and I weep…#our kind. does ‘our kind’ HAUNT your waking hours like it does mine. oh my god.#im very much against assigning modern vocabulary to people in the past who didn’t have access to it#but bram stoker is possibly the only figure I would want#to bring to the future just to give him all the words we’ve created on how he could identify#at every turn that is a man *desperate* for community#I cannot stop thinking about it.#he sent his letter on Valentine’s Day. i am so haunted by him#mine#queer#history#dracula#bram stoker
